AI Art Goes to Auction: Humanoid Robot’s ‘AI God’ Painting of Alan Turing Expected to Fetch $180,000
Ai-Da, a humanoid robot artist powered by AI algorithms and robotics, will debut at Sotheby’s as the first robot to sell artwork in a major auction. Ai-Da’s painting, an abstract work of computing pioneer Alan Turing titled AI God, is expected to sell for between $120,000 and $180,000, with proceeds allocated toward the robot’s further development.
Ai-Da, developed by Oxford University’s Aidan Meller and a team of scientists in 2019, creates art through advanced AI and visual processing capabilities, allowing it to interpret and paint complex subjects. The piece AI God uses a fragmented, layered style to reflect what Ai-Da described as the “emotional and intellectual layers” of Turing.
The auction represents a significant milestone as the worlds of AI, robotics, and fine art intersect, raising questions about the role of AI in creative expression.
