Combatting Physician Burnout: The Role of AI in Supporting Women Doctors
In 2023, 48.2% of physicians reported experiencing at least one symptom of burnout, down slightly from 53% in 2022. However, burnout continues to disproportionately affect women, with 54.5% of female physicians reporting symptoms compared to just 42% of male physicians. One potential solution to this ongoing issue is the growing adoption of augmented intelligence (AI) to help reduce some of the workload pressures on doctors, particularly women.
By automating administrative tasks and increasing operational efficiency, AI has the potential to significantly lessen burnout. Female physicians, on average, spend 41 more minutes on electronic health record (EHR) duties during an eight-hour shift compared to their male counterparts, including 10 extra minutes outside of regular hours and 31 additional minutes writing notes.
