US Hosts Global AI Safety Talks Amid Policy Uncertainty
Global AI leaders convened in San Francisco this week, hosted by the Biden administration, to discuss AI safety measures, including combating deepfakes and ensuring secure AI deployment. Attendees from countries such as Australia, Japan, and the EU focused on fostering international collaboration, particularly for nations with limited resources. The U.S. AI Safety Institute, established by Biden’s executive order, played a key role in shaping these discussions, emphasizing that safety can fuel innovation by building trust in AI systems.
However, uncertainty looms over the initiative as President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to repeal Biden’s AI policies, claiming they stifle innovation, without providing specifics. Despite this, experts suggest that foundational AI safety work, such as standards and research spearheaded by the Institute, will likely continue regardless of administration changes, underscoring the bipartisan importance of addressing AI risks responsibly.
